Gupta gained wider recognition after becoming the co-winner of the second season of Comicstaan alongside Samay Raina in 2019.[1][2]
Early life and education
Aakash Gupta was born on 5 January 1993 in Delhi, India. He completed his schooling in Delhi and later graduated from the University of Delhi with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. During his college years, he became involved in theatre and performing arts and participated in stage productions and college cultural events.[3]
Gupta later worked as an audit associate at KPMG for approximately one year before leaving the corporate sector to focus on theatre, improv and comedy. He developed an interest in improvisational performance and joined Cueless Improv, a Delhi-based comedy improv collective, in 2014. He performed with the group while continuing to develop his skills in theatre and stand-up comedy.[4]
Career
Theatre and improv
Gupta's early performing career was closely connected with theatre and improvisational comedy. He received training in performing arts and sketch comedy and performed in theatre productions and improv shows.
In 2014, he began pursuing stand-up comedy after performing at an open mic at Akshara Theatre in Delhi. His experience in theatre and improvisation subsequently became an important part of his performance style.[5]
Gupta also worked with The Humour Beings, a comedy network associated with comedian Nitin Gupta, contributing as an actor and co-writer on comedy sketches.
Stand-up comedy
Gupta released his first stand-up video on YouTube in 2017 after several years of performing live comedy. His early material focused on everyday experiences, relationships, public spaces and observations from life in Delhi.
One of his best-known early performances was his comedy material about the Delhi Metro. The video became widely viewed online and contributed to his growing recognition as a digital stand-up comedian.
His comedy commonly uses observations from everyday situations and develops them into longer stories. His material has covered subjects including public transport, relationships, shopping areas, friendships, dogs and ordinary urban experiences.[6]
Comicstaan
In 2019, Gupta participated in the second season of Comicstaan, an Amazon Prime Video stand-up comedy competition. The programme brought together emerging comedians who competed through different comedy formats and challenges.
Gupta reached the finale and was declared a joint winner of the season alongside Samay Raina. The two comedians shared the season's winner title and received prize money of ₹10 lakh each.[7]
The Comicstaan 2 victory significantly expanded Gupta's audience and led to additional live performances, digital projects and appearances in comedy programmes.
YouTube and digital content
Gupta has maintained a substantial presence on YouTube, where he publishes recordings of his stand-up performances. His videos have included material such as Delhi Metro, Dogs, Sarojini Nagar and Paan.
His Sarojini Nagar performance became one of his most widely recognized comedy videos and was reported as having reached the number-one position on YouTube's trending list. His online audience subsequently expanded internationally as viewers discovered his comedy through YouTube.[8]
Gupta received YouTube's Silver Play Button in 2018 after reaching the platform's subscriber milestone and later received a Gold Play Button in 2020.[9]
