He has also worked in film and digital entertainment, including appearances in Comedy Couple and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.[1]
Early life and education
Anubhav Singh Bassi was born on 9 January 1991 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. He attended Dewan Public School before moving to Lucknow for higher education. He completed a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degree from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University in Lucknow in 2015.[2]
Before pursuing comedy professionally, Bassi explored several career paths. He worked in the legal field and was also a UPSC aspirant and entrepreneur. His transition into stand-up comedy began in 2017 after he performed at an open-mic event in Delhi.[3]
Career
Stand-up comedy
Bassi began performing stand-up comedy professionally in 2017. His early performances were based largely on personal experiences and stories from his life, including school, college, hostel experiences, friendships and attempts at different careers.
His comedy developed around extended storytelling rather than short-form joke structures. His performances frequently use conversational narration and recurring characters and situations drawn from everyday experiences.
One of his early widely circulated comedy performances was Cheating, which helped establish his presence on YouTube and within India's stand-up comedy scene. His online videos subsequently accumulated hundreds of millions of views.[4]
Bassi has also taken his stand-up performances on tour across India. His Bas Kar Bassi show was performed in more than 35 cities across the country.[5]
YouTube and digital work
Bassi established his YouTube presence before becoming a widely recognized live performer. His channel primarily features stand-up comedy performances and storytelling-based videos.
His online popularity became an important part of his career and helped his comedy reach audiences beyond live venues. According to his entertainment representation profile, his YouTube videos have accumulated more than 200 million views and his main channel has more than five million subscribers, with figures varying over time as platform statistics change.[6]
Bassi has also appeared in digital comedy productions and contributed a monologue to Amazon Funnies.
Bas Kar Bassi
In February 2023, Bassi released his first full-length stand-up special, Anubhav Singh Bassi: Bas Kar Bassi, on Amazon Prime Video.
The special presents a fictionalized account of Bassi's early professional life after graduating from law school. It follows his move to Delhi, his experiences as a young lawyer, his friendships and the series of career decisions that eventually led him toward comedy. Amazon Prime Video lists the special as an 83-minute Hindi-language comedy performance directed by Abhishek Upmanyu.[7]
The release marked Bassi's transition from primarily online and live stand-up performances to a full-length streaming special.
Acting career
Bassi expanded into acting alongside his stand-up career. His first notable screen appearances included a cameo in the 2020 ZEE5 film Comedy Couple.[8]
In 2023, he made his Bollywood film debut in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, directed by Luv Ranjan. He played Manu Dabbas, a friend of Ranbir Kapoor's character, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. The film was released theatrically on 8 March 2023.[9]
His film work represented an expansion of his career from stand-up comedy and digital video into mainstream Hindi cinema.
Television and other appearances
Bassi has appeared on Indian television and digital entertainment programmes in connection with his comedy career. He appeared on The Kapil Sharma Show and has participated in interview and comedy programmes discussing his transition from law to stand-up comedy.[10]
He has also delivered a TED Talk discussing his experiences and career journey.
Comedy style
Bassi's comedy is primarily characterized by storytelling and autobiographical material. His sets frequently draw on experiences from his childhood, education, hostel life, friendships and professional attempts before entering comedy.
Rather than relying exclusively on short jokes, his performances often develop individual stories over several minutes. This approach has also influenced the format of his YouTube videos and live performances.
His material commonly combines conversational Hindi with everyday observations and recurring personal anecdotes.
Tours and live performances
Live stand-up has remained an important part of Bassi's career. His performances have included tours across numerous Indian cities, with Bas Kar Bassi becoming one of his principal touring shows.
He has also performed internationally for audiences outside India. His touring work has expanded the distribution of his Hindi-language stand-up beyond digital platforms and domestic comedy venues.[11]
Recognition
Bassi received the Youth Icon of the Year award at the Golden Glory Awards in 2021. The recognition came during the period in which his online stand-up performances and live comedy work were expanding his audience.[12]
His career has subsequently included stand-up comedy, YouTube, live touring, streaming specials and acting in Hindi-language films.
