Deepinder Goyal (born 26 January 1983) is an Indian entrepreneur, investor, and technology executive. He is the founder of Zomato, the food discovery and delivery business that forms part of Eternal Limited. Goyal has also been involved in technology and startup ventures including Blinkit, LAT Aerospace, and Temple.
Goyal's career is associated with online food discovery, food delivery, quick commerce, restaurant technology, and technology-enabled consumer services. He began his entrepreneurial career after working as a management consultant at Bain & Company and subsequently developed Zomato from an online restaurant information service into a broader food and commerce platform. The company was initially launched under the name Foodiebay before being renamed Zomato. [1]
Early life and education
Goyal was born in Punjab, India. He studied at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), where he completed an Integrated Master of Technology degree in Mathematics and Computing in 2005. IIT Delhi has recognized Goyal as a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for his entrepreneurial work. [2]
During his time at IIT Delhi, Goyal developed an interest in technology and entrepreneurship. His education in mathematics and computing later provided a technical foundation for his work in internet-based businesses.
Early career
After graduating from IIT Delhi, Goyal joined Bain & Company, a management consulting firm. He worked there as a management consultant before leaving the company to pursue entrepreneurship. [3]
While working at Bain, Goyal noticed that employees frequently needed access to restaurant menus. He created an internal portal containing restaurant menus for colleagues at the company. The idea eventually developed into a broader online restaurant information service.
Founding of Zomato
In 2008, Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah launched Foodiebay, an online service providing restaurant information and menus. The service initially focused on restaurant discovery in Delhi and the National Capital Region.
Foodiebay was subsequently renamed Zomato in 2010. The company expanded its restaurant information service and began providing additional features related to restaurant discovery, reviews, and dining.
Zomato later expanded from restaurant information into online food ordering and delivery. Goyal has described the company's early development as a progression from scanned restaurant menus and reviews toward online ordering and other food-related services. [4]
Expansion of Zomato
Under Goyal's leadership, Zomato expanded beyond its original restaurant-discovery model. The company developed services covering food delivery, dining-out experiences, restaurant services, and aspects of the food supply chain.
The expansion was supported by the growth of online food ordering and smartphone-based consumer services. Zomato also expanded internationally and operated in multiple markets during its international expansion phase. [5]
Goyal's public writing about Zomato has discussed the company's development, business model, organizational culture, food delivery economics, and product strategy. [6]
Zomato public listing
Zomato became a publicly listed company in 2021. Its initial public offering was oversubscribed and the company subsequently became one of India's prominent publicly traded technology businesses. [7]
The public listing marked an important stage in the development of the business and provided Zomato with access to public capital markets.
Blinkit and quick commerce
Zomato expanded its activities beyond restaurant delivery through its investment in and acquisition of Blinkit, a quick-commerce company formerly known as Grofers.
Zomato acquired Blinkit in 2022. Blinkit's business focuses on rapid delivery of groceries and other consumer products through a network of local fulfillment facilities. The acquisition expanded the company's activities from food delivery into the broader quick-commerce sector. [8]
Eternal
In 2024, Zomato's parent corporate identity was renamed Eternal Limited. The group includes Zomato, Blinkit, District, and Hyperpure among its businesses. [9]
In January 2026, Goyal stepped down as chief executive officer of Eternal's flagship business and became vice chairman and non-executive director. According to his public communication to the stock exchange, the change was connected with his intention to pursue new ideas and projects. [10]
Other ventures
Goyal's activities have expanded beyond Zomato and Eternal.
IIT Delhi's alumni report identifies him as the founder of LAT Aerospace and Temple in addition to his association with Eternal. [11]
Temple is a technology venture developing wearable technology intended to measure cerebral blood flow. In 2026, the startup received a reported investment of US$54 million from investors including Peak XV Partners and Steadview Capital. [12]
LAT Aerospace is another venture associated with Goyal and focuses on aerospace technology.
Recognition
In 2020, IIT Delhi awarded Goyal its Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of entrepreneurial achievement. The institute noted his role in founding Zomato and the company's development from a restaurant discovery platform into a broader food technology business. [13]
Goyal has also been featured in international business publications for his work in technology entrepreneurship and the development of Zomato. [14]
Entrepreneurial work
Goyal's entrepreneurial career has involved the development of technology platforms across several sectors. His work at Zomato connected restaurant discovery with digital ordering and food delivery, while the company's expansion into Blinkit extended the business into quick commerce.
His later ventures represent a broader interest in technology and new product development. These activities include food and consumer technology, quick commerce, aerospace, and wearable technology.
