Lex Fridman (born Alexei Fridman; 15 August 1983) is an American computer scientist, researcher, and podcast host. His academic work has focused on artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, computer vision, behavioral biometrics, and human–AI interaction. He is known for hosting the Lex Fridman Podcast, a long-form interview program covering science, technology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, history, politics, economics, and other fields.

Early life and education

Fridman earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Drexel University. His doctoral research focused on learning identity from behavioral biometrics for active authentication. His academic interests included machine learning, computer vision, robotics, activity recognition, and methods for identifying users through behavioral characteristics.

His research in behavioral biometrics examined how patterns in human behavior could be used for authentication and identity verification. This work formed part of his broader interest in the interaction between humans and intelligent computing systems.

Research career

Fridman previously worked at Google, where he was involved in deep-learning research related to behavior-based authentication. He later became associated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his research concentrated on human-centered artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and autonomous vehicles.

At MIT, Fridman was associated with the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS). His research examined the relationship between human behavior and artificial intelligence systems, particularly in applications involving autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles.

Areas of his research included driver monitoring, driver-state sensing, cognitive-load estimation, computer vision, naturalistic driving data, and human supervision of artificial intelligence systems.

Academic research

Fridman's research encompasses several applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

One project associated with his research is DeepTraffic, which explores reinforcement learning for navigation in dense, multi-agent traffic environments. The project examines how machine-learning systems can learn driving behaviors in complex traffic conditions.

His academic work has also investigated active authentication on mobile devices. This research examined behavioral biometric modalities that can be used to distinguish between authorized and unauthorized users.

Other research areas associated with his academic work include driver gaze estimation, driver frustration, cognitive-load estimation, video-data annotation, vehicle-to-pedestrian communication, and human supervision of black-box artificial intelligence systems.

Fridman's research has received recognition from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). His work received an Honorable Mention Award at the 2018 ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), as well as recognition associated with CHI-17.

Lex Fridman Podcast

In 2018, Fridman began hosting a podcast that later became known as the Lex Fridman Podcast. The program primarily consists of long-form conversations with researchers, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, historians, political figures, and other public personalities.

The podcast initially concentrated on artificial intelligence and technology. Its subject matter subsequently expanded to include physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, history, engineering, robotics, programming, music, film, art, sports, business, economics, religion, astronomy, and geopolitics.

Guests have included researchers and technology figures such as Yann LeCun, Andrej Karpathy, Terence Tao, Jensen Huang, and Mark Zuckerberg. The program has also featured political and public figures including Narendra Modi, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk.

The podcast is distributed in audio and video formats. Its official website provides podcast episodes and transcripts.

Research interests

Fridman's documented research interests include:

His research generally examines how artificial intelligence and machine-learning systems can interact with humans and operate in real-world environments.

Public work

Fridman's public work extends beyond his academic research through his podcast and discussions concerning science, technology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, history, and human behavior.

His long-form interview format has brought academic researchers, technology executives, entrepreneurs, political figures, athletes, and other public figures into extended discussions of their respective areas of expertise.

Personal interests

Fridman's official website lists interests including guitar, piano, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and judo.
