Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani (born 19 April 1957) is an Indian business executive and entrepreneur. He is the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), one of India's largest private-sector companies. Under his leadership, Reliance has expanded from its traditional energy and petrochemicals businesses into telecommunications, digital services, retail, media and entertainment, and new energy.

Ambani has played a major role in the development of Reliance's petrochemical and refining businesses, the establishment of Reliance Retail, and the creation of Jio, Reliance's digital-services business. Reliance's current businesses span energy and materials, digital services, retail, media and entertainment, green technologies and artificial intelligence.

Early life and education

Mukesh Ambani was born on 19 April 1957 in Aden, then part of the Colony of Aden, to Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani. His father later established the business that developed into Reliance Industries.

Ambani studied chemical engineering at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, formerly known as the University Department of Chemical Technology of the University of Mumbai. He subsequently pursued an MBA at Stanford University in the United States.

His education in chemical engineering became particularly relevant to his later work in petrochemicals, refining and manufacturing.

Joining Reliance

Ambani joined Reliance in 1981 and became involved in the company's expansion and backward-integration strategy. His work contributed to Reliance's movement from textiles into polyester fibres, petrochemicals, petroleum refining and oil and gas exploration and production.

He has been a member of the Reliance board since 1977 and subsequently became one of the principal executives responsible for developing the company's large-scale manufacturing operations.

During this period, Reliance invested heavily in integrated manufacturing facilities and expanded its petrochemical production capabilities.

Jamnagar refinery

One of Ambani's most significant projects was the development of Reliance's large petroleum-refining complex at Jamnagar, Gujarat.

In the late 1990s, he spearheaded the creation of a grassroots refinery at Jamnagar with an initial capacity of 660,000 barrels of crude oil per day. A second refinery was subsequently established alongside the first.

The integrated Jamnagar complex combines refining with petrochemicals, power generation, port infrastructure and related industrial facilities. Reliance states that the combined refining capacity at the location is approximately 1.4 million barrels of oil per day, making Jamnagar one of the world's major refining hubs.

The project became a major part of Reliance's transformation into an integrated energy and materials company.

Reliance Industries leadership

Ambani became Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries in 2002 following the death of his father, Dhirubhai Ambani.

Under his leadership, Reliance continued to expand its core petrochemical and energy businesses while entering new consumer and technology markets.

Reliance later became the first Indian private-sector company to be listed in the Fortune Global 500 under Ambani's leadership.

Ambani's strategy increasingly focused on creating businesses with large-scale infrastructure and nationwide reach.

Reliance Retail

In 2006, Reliance entered the organized retail sector through Reliance Retail. Ambani led the development of a large retail network covering multiple formats and supply-chain infrastructure.

Reliance Retail subsequently expanded across grocery, consumer electronics, fashion, lifestyle and other retail categories. Reliance describes the business as India's largest organized retail player.

The retail business became one of the major growth engines of Reliance alongside its traditional energy and materials businesses.

Reliance Jio

One of Ambani's most significant initiatives was the development of Reliance Jio. The business was created to provide nationwide high-speed digital connectivity and a broad range of digital services.

Jio commercially launched its services in 2016 and introduced large-scale 4G connectivity to the Indian market. Its expansion contributed to rapid growth in mobile data usage and intensified competition among Indian telecommunications companies.

Ambani subsequently led Jio's expansion into digital services, including broadband, entertainment, financial services, cloud services and other technology platforms.

Reliance states that Jio has developed one of the world's largest 4G and 5G broadband wireless networks and provides digital services across areas including education, healthcare, financial services, government-citizen interfaces and entertainment.

By 2026, Jio had more than 524 million digital subscribers, according to Reliance's 2025–26 integrated report.

Expansion into media and technology

Under Ambani's leadership, Reliance expanded further into media and entertainment.

The group's businesses include television, digital content, sports and entertainment platforms. Reliance has also increased its involvement in artificial intelligence and next-generation digital technologies.

The company's 2025–26 integrated report identifies digital services, retail, media and entertainment, green technologies and AI as important parts of its diversified business portfolio.

New energy and sustainability

In addition to its established energy and materials businesses, Ambani has positioned Reliance toward renewable and low-carbon technologies.

Reliance has announced investments in an integrated clean-energy ecosystem involving solar manufacturing, energy storage, hydrogen and other technologies.

The company's 2025–26 annual report describes a gigawatt-scale integrated clean-energy ecosystem under development as part of its long-term strategy.

Reliance Foundation and philanthropy

Ambani and his family are also associated with philanthropic initiatives through the Reliance Foundation, led by Nita Ambani.

The foundation works in areas including healthcare, education, rural development, sports, disaster response and social development.

Reliance established the foundation in 2010, with the stated objective of supporting social and community development initiatives across India.

Recognition

Ambani has received numerous business and professional honors during his career.

His recognitions include the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, the Othmer Gold Medal for contributions to the chemical industry, and international recognition for his leadership in business and technology.

Reliance's official awards record also lists Ambani among recipients of major business and leadership recognitions. In 2025, he was named among India's Best CEOs by Fortune India, and in 2026 he was included in the Indian Express list of the 100 Most Powerful Indians.

Ambani is also an elected Foreign Member of the United States National Academy of Engineering. He has served on international business and academic advisory bodies, including the World Economic Forum's Foundation Board and Stanford University's Global Advisory Council.

Personal life

Mukesh Ambani is married to Nita Ambani, an entrepreneur and philanthropist. They have three children: Akash Ambani, Isha Ambani and Anant Ambani.

The Ambani family's business activities are closely associated with Reliance Industries and its subsidiaries and affiliated companies. Akash, Isha and Anant have taken leadership and board positions within different Reliance businesses.

Legacy

Mukesh Ambani's career is associated with the transformation of Reliance Industries from an energy and materials company into a diversified enterprise with major operations in retail, telecommunications, digital services, media and entertainment, and new energy.

His leadership of Reliance Jio significantly changed India's telecommunications market, while Reliance Retail expanded the group's presence in consumer markets.

As of 2026, Ambani continues to serve as Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries. The company's businesses collectively serve hundreds of millions of customers across India and operate across multiple sectors of the economy.
