The International Cricket Council (ICC) has recognized him among the most influential cricketers of the modern era.

Kohli began his international career in 2008 and became a central figure in India's batting lineup. He was part of India's victorious 2008 Under-19 World Cup team and later represented India in the 2011 Cricket World Cup, which India won on home soil. He subsequently became one of the team's principal batters and captains.

Early life

Virat Kohli was born on 5 November 1988 in Delhi, India. He developed an interest in cricket at an early age and began training at the West Delhi Cricket Academy. His early performances in junior cricket helped establish him as a promising young batter.

Kohli captained the Indian Under-19 cricket team at the 2008 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia. India won the tournament under his captaincy, providing an early indication of his leadership abilities.[1]

His performances at the Under-19 level led to his progression into senior domestic cricket and eventually the Indian national team.

International career

Kohli made his ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka in August 2008. He initially established himself in India's limited-overs setup and became a regular member of the national team.

In the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Kohli was part of India's championship-winning squad. He scored a century in India's opening match of the tournament against Bangladesh and contributed to the team's successful campaign.[2]

Kohli made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2011. He gradually became an important part of India's Test batting lineup and developed a reputation for performing in demanding overseas conditions.

His aggressive style and ability to score consistently across formats made him one of the leading batters in international cricket.

Captaincy

Kohli became India's Test captain during the 2014–15 tour of Australia. He later took over India's limited-overs captaincy and served as captain across formats.

During his Test captaincy, India achieved a number of significant results overseas. In the 2018–19 series against Australia, India became the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia.[3]

Kohli captained India in 68 Test matches and recorded 40 victories, making him India's most successful Test captain by wins. During his tenure, India reached the final of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and held the No. 1 position in the ICC Test rankings for an extended period.[4]

Kohli stepped down as India's Test captain in January 2022 after a highly successful period as captain.

Test career

Kohli's Test career lasted from 2011 to 2025. During that period, he established himself as one of India's leading Test batters and accumulated more than 9,000 Test runs.

He scored 30 Test centuries and 31 fifties during his career. His Test batting record included significant performances in Australia, South Africa, England and other overseas conditions.[5]

Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025. He finished his Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.[6]

ODI career

Kohli has been particularly successful in One Day International cricket. He became one of the fastest batters to reach major ODI run milestones and developed a reputation for successfully chasing targets.

In 2018, he became the fastest player to reach 10,000 ODI runs, achieving the milestone in 205 innings, 54 innings fewer than the previous record holder Sachin Tendulkar.[7]

His ODI career has included numerous centuries and high-scoring performances against leading international teams. He has also been particularly successful in run chases, earning a reputation as one of the most effective ODI batters of his era.

Kohli was part of India's squad at the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where he produced a series of major batting performances and was named the Player of the Tournament.

T20 cricket

Kohli has also been a major figure in Twenty20 International cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He represented the Royal Challengers Bengaluru throughout his IPL career and became one of the franchise's most recognizable players. He has scored heavily in the IPL and has served as the team's captain.

At international level, Kohli played a significant role in India's 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaign. He was named Player of the Match in the final against South Africa after scoring 76 runs, helping India win the tournament.[8]

Following India's T20 World Cup victory, Kohli announced his retirement from T20I cricket in June 2024.

Major achievements

Kohli has received numerous individual awards and has been recognized repeatedly by the ICC and other sporting organizations.

He won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year in 2017 and again in 2018. In 2018, he also became the first player to receive the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year, ICC Men's Test Player of the Year and ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year awards in the same awards cycle.[9]

In 2020, he received the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men's Cricketer of the Decade for his performances during the 2010s.[10]

The Government of India awarded Kohli the Arjuna Award in 2013, the Padma Shri in 2017 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2018 for his contribution to Indian sport.

His IPL career has included multiple record-breaking batting performances. He has also been one of the league's leading run-scorers and has played a central role in the popularity of cricket's T20 format in India.

Playing style

Kohli is a right-handed top-order batter known for his technically strong stroke play, particularly through the cover region and during run chases. His batting combines conventional cricketing shots with aggressive running between the wickets and the ability to accelerate scoring.

His emphasis on physical fitness also became an important part of his professional identity. During his captaincy, India placed increased emphasis on fitness standards, athletic fielding and physical conditioning.

Personal life

Kohli married Indian actress and producer Anushka Sharma in December 2017. The couple have two children, a daughter named Vamika and a son named Akaay.

Kohli and Sharma have also been involved in charitable and social initiatives. Kohli has supported causes related to sports, education, health and child welfare through various philanthropic activities.

Business and brand activities

His public profile has made him one of India's most commercially recognized sports personalities, with a substantial global following.

Legacy

Virat Kohli's career is associated with several major developments in modern Indian cricket. As a batter, he became one of the most prolific run-scorers of his generation across international formats. As captain, he contributed to a stronger emphasis on fitness, competitiveness and overseas Test performance.

His Test captaincy produced India's first Test series victory in Australia and established India as a consistently competitive side in overseas conditions.[11]

Kohli remains one of the most recognizable Indian cricketers internationally and is regarded as an important figure in the history of modern Indian cricket.
