Early life and education
Brian Chesky was born on 29 August 1981 in Niskayuna, New York, United States. He grew up in the Albany area and developed an interest in art and design at an early age. His parents were social workers.

Chesky attended the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he studied industrial design. At RISD, he met Joe Gebbia, who later became his co-founder at Airbnb. Chesky's design education subsequently influenced the way Airbnb approached its products and user experience.

After graduating from RISD, Chesky moved to Los Angeles and worked as an industrial designer. He later moved to San Francisco, where he lived with Gebbia. The two eventually began developing the concept that became Airbnb.

Founding Airbnb
The origins of Airbnb date to 2007, when Chesky and Joe Gebbia became hosts to three guests in their San Francisco home. They offered short-term accommodation using air mattresses in their apartment after local hotels became difficult to find during a design conference. This experiment became the starting point for what later developed into Airbnb.

Chesky and Gebbia initially developed the idea as a way for people to rent unused space in their homes to travelers. Nathan Blecharczyk, a computer programmer and fellow entrepreneur, subsequently joined the project and helped build the technology behind the service. The company was initially known as AirBed & Breakfast before adopting the shorter name Airbnb.

The founders faced financial difficulties during Airbnb's early years. In an effort to generate revenue and support the company, they produced and sold limited-edition cereal boxes based on the 2008 United States presidential election. The experience helped the founders finance the company while they continued developing the platform.

Growth of Airbnb
Chesky served as Airbnb's chief executive as the company expanded beyond its original home-sharing concept. The platform enabled hosts to list properties and travelers to search for and book accommodation through the service.

The company gradually expanded internationally and added new categories of accommodation and travel-related offerings. Airbnb later introduced experiences and other services intended to broaden the platform beyond traditional lodging.

Airbnb's growth transformed the company into one of the most prominent businesses associated with the sharing economy. According to Airbnb, the platform had more than 5.5 million hosts and more than 2.5 billion guest arrivals across more than 220 countries and regions as of May 2026.

Leadership and design philosophy
Chesky has emphasized the importance of design in Airbnb's development. His education at RISD and professional background in industrial design influenced the company's approach to product development, branding, and user experience.

Airbnb has described its design approach as extending beyond visual appearance to the way products and services function. Chesky and Gebbia applied this philosophy to the company's original business model, trust systems, product interfaces, and services.

As CEO, Chesky has also remained closely involved in product development and company strategy. Airbnb's corporate governance information identifies him as both co-founder and chief executive officer, with responsibility for the company's overall vision and strategy.

Airbnb public offering
Airbnb became a publicly traded company in December 2020 through an initial public offering on the Nasdaq stock exchange. The public listing represented a major milestone in the company's development from a small startup founded by three entrepreneurs into a large global technology company.

Chesky remained chief executive following the public offering and continued to oversee the company's strategy and product development.

Leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic created a major disruption for the global travel industry and significantly affected Airbnb's business. In 2020, the company reduced its workforce and changed its business priorities in response to the sharp decline in travel.

Chesky subsequently focused on adapting Airbnb to changes in travel behavior. The company later benefited from increased demand for longer stays and travel associated with remote work.

Living on Airbnb
In 2022, Chesky announced that he would live primarily in Airbnb properties rather than maintaining a permanent home as his main residence. He planned to move between different cities and towns every few weeks while continuing to return to San Francisco. He described the experiment as a way to experience the platform as a user and explore changes in the way people live and work.

Chesky is a signatory of The Giving Pledge, an initiative through which participating billionaires commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes during their lifetimes or through their wills. Airbnb states that Chesky has committed to donating the net proceeds of his CEO equity compensation to community, philanthropic, and charitable causes.
